This design seeks to restructure the relationship between the spaces in Alumni Gardens, tying them together while concretely defining their borders. This will change the way people move through and see the gardens, with the goal of encouraging visitors to wander and linger longer, more fully experiencing Alumni gardens as an interconnected group of plantings spanning history.
The design uses architectural plantings to manipulate views, patching the hole in Alumni garden’s formal border and making the barley arch an effective entrance gateway. Within, the use of repeated elements creates continuity between the distinct garden areas, tying the herb garden, physically and aesthetically, into its surrounding, without homogenizing any of the existing spaces. A meandering path is positioned in such a way to encourage the most complete route through the garden, allowing a complete exploration without retracing steps.
